The Problem

The sales force of Life Technologies was operating solely on manual paper-based marketing material. They needed to carry a significant amount of marketing collateral out on the field, which could be cause for loss of material on the way or simply forgetting an important document. Even if the client acquires a customer, time is lost due to manually managing paperwork and data that could be easily automated and parsed. The sales team would collect the information from customer, return to the office and then place the order. In addition, the whole system was far from eco-friendly, as it consumes a lot of paper and spikes the cost of printing. Even frequent changes and adjustments to content are not possible since paper would have to be used and material would be re-printed. A leading research organization should not have an antiquated paper-based system resulting in unfavorable impressions on branding and social responsibility.


The major challenge was maintaining the brand value of Life Technologies, since the proposed application was planned to use as marketing tool. It was not just the digitation of the marketing material and developing order management. We built an intuitive design in which the sales person can quickly search the data according to clients’ needs, without convoluted information architecture. The entire approach was lead with the following maxim in mind, “The right information to the right person, at the right time.”

Result Obtained

We designed and developed an application to replace the paper-based marketing literature with a completely digital/paperless workflow for its sales force. Dynamic categorization was used to allow products to be displayed with extensive search features that save the PDF with the corresponding product and send an order via email digitizing the sales process in its entirety. The iPad was selected as the supporting device of the application and we designed the customized interface with a compelling UX (user experience) that was easy to use especially on a mobile device that allowed a sales person to quickly access and present the information to a potential customer. The application houses updated information files with the support of document management from a back-end system. No internet connectivity is required to use this application since a local database is updated with the latest files as soon as they are requested. Feedback is relayed quickly as well as improving process flows and business operations in a 360 degree approach.

ROI and Benefits

Life Technologies no longer suffers through tedious management of tangible documentation. The application helped Life Technologies stay ahead in the market by sharing and providing the latest information to their sales force in real-time. Because of the paper-based marketing material, valuable resources were being wasted constantly. The sales force experienced a spike in productivity and client acquisition making placing an order almost effortless. The added advantage was the availability of the application in offline mode, which requires an internet connection only to update information, resulted in a seamless sales process making data accessible and editable as needed. In addition, each sales person’s preferences are saved and are easily managed within the system.
