History of computers and its programming languages are not too old like other inventions, but it has been a radical and innovative invention so far. It has changed the way the world behaves and communicates. As far as the history goes, the first computer invented by Charles Babbage used the punch card system to read and write the data. Although his first computer was a total failure, he never stopped. He always improved on his invention to make it a better world as we have it today. There are so many contributors behind this great invention that it is hard to name all of them.
The first fully digital computers were introduced during the World War II, as it was highly needed for military purposes. The first digital computer could do addition, subtraction and other basic arithmetic functions with the use of numerical tables stored in its memory. The size of this computer was as big as a room. People could actually physically get into the system to check for problems. Amazing, isnt it! Now a day we have computers, laptops and palmtops that can be carried anywhere you go. The time has always improved the performance of computers. As the time went on, the size of computers reduced and the speed improved.
The programming languages history goes back to almost same time as of invention of digital computers. Programming language is basically a set of instructions to be given to computers to perform certain operations. It all started with assembly language programming because of speed and memory limitation. Although, Charles Babbage had some sort of software to communicate with hardware, it was very much limited.
In early 1960s, three most basic programming languages became successful: FORTRAN, LISP and COBOL. After that other programming languages like Pascal, C, and Prolog etc. followed. 1960 to 1970 was the best period to bring out the pioneering programming languages with different concepts. Most of the major language paradigms now in use were invented in this period. The object oriented programming started in early 1970s. C was the first system programming language, and its successor C++ was introduced in the early 1980s.
In mid 1990s, the use of internet grew rapidly. Internet provided another break through in the history of programming languages, which gave chance to languages like Java, Ruby and C#. Increased awareness, ease of use and widespread acceptance of ecommerce has always inspired programmers to create something new and explore the unexplored. With the increasing demand of online web applications, PHP, ASP and ASP.Net has been widely used now a day.
