Till sometime back search engines were using ‘Boolean Keyword Queries’ to analyse relevant documents for search where keyword stuffing was a common problem. Search engines only identify keywords same as the keywords used in search query. They did not behave like human and were not capable of identifying synonyms of keywords or conceptually similar keywords i.e. keywords nearly fit in context. When search engines started to use ‘Latent Semantic Indexing’ in their algorithms, the scenario changed.

When you query a search engine that uses LSI, the search engine examines similarity values calculated for every content word. This method examines the document collection as a whole and knows which documents are semantically close or distant based on the relationships between all the words in each document and all the words in the rest of the collection. LSI does not require an exact match to the query phrase to find relevant documents.

Now user finding the search query results contextually related to their search terms. LSI is used to determine the true meaning of homonyms, heteronyms and polysemy. In simple words if you run a search query on ‘chicken fries’ then you will not end up with the documents about chicken as animal but the results will be related to cooking the chicken. In other example, if we search for ‘Saddam Hussein’ then you will not have only documents containing word ‘Saddam Hussein’ but we will have all documents related to Iraq or related to Iraq wars. Due to LSI SEO writing has now changed all together. First of all you don’t need repetition of same keywords many times therefore, keywords density is meaningless. You can’t say that our pages would be ranked higher if we have done keyword stuffing. All the old practices have lost importance with the introduction of LSI. Your SEO writers have to write content thoroughly related to your subject and should provide genuine information related to it. Your writers can use treasure of their vocabulary freely and can provide some quality content. If content of your website is not really useful and informative then you never will get higher ranking in the search engines. Get links from semantically relevant pages

LSI also considers links so you should try to link your pages with other relevant pages. Don’t try to get links from the automobiles web pages for your iPhone website. Therefore it is very important that you submit your website to the right category in Internet directories. A link to your website that comes from a page that contains links to other web pages that deal with the same topic has a greater effect on the rankings of your website than a link from a page that links to totally different pages and your site.
